We the People: Becoming American
Take a step back in time in America’s history. See Lady Liberty in the distance. Walk through the doors at Ellis Island and follow in the footsteps of the millions of people who sought a new life in America. The Franklin Public Library received a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) “We the People: Becoming American” Bookshelf grant. The NEH presented the library with 15 classic books on the theme of “Becoming American.” The library is sponsoring two programs and an essay contest using the NEH materials.

Grades 7-12 Essay Contest
Students are to read one or more of the NEH books and then write an essay of 500 words or less on what it meant to be an American for the character(s). Entries are due at the Franklin Public Library by April 20, 2007 5:00pm. Entries may be legibly handwritten or word processed. Winners will be announced May 7, 2007 by 5:00pm. Prizes will be awarded. More details are available at the library or on the website: www.mcfls.org/franklin.
