Show us your breasts.....or not?

Canada is using a novel approach to generating awareness about breast cancer.

Women are being encouraged to show pictures of their breasts online, scars from previous surgeries and all.

After being encouraged to do self-examinations, women are being asked to take photos of their breasts -- whether fully clothed, in a bra or topless -- and upload those pictures to the Booby Wall at the Web site www.boobywall.ca.

Many women are participating.

This concept probably wouldn’t go over very well in the tiny town of Arlington, Oregon.

Arlington’s mayor, 42-year old Carmen Kontur-Gronquist is on You Tube in just her underwear.

Why she did it is a mystery.

She won’t say.

Her constituents are not happy.

Her honor should just hold a news conference and claim she was doing her part to support her friends to the north and create “awareness.”

Mayors.

In their underwear.

On-line.

Mr. Taylor,  don’t even think about it.

If it takes young women having to view actual mastectomies on a site such as this, in order to get inspired to do self-examinations, then there's a real problem here.  "Take some of the fear away."  I don't think so.  Viewing a mastectomy IS scary.

Young woman are being inundated with the "PINK" everything regarding breast cancer.  I guess it makes it pretty.  These pictures are reality, except for the "other" ones that have been uploaded.

You can Google mastectomy photos and see pictures.  You don't need this.

Women need to be educated at a younger age, but with real education.

Ridiculous.

Way to go, Canada.

But Canada has the best health care methods....just ask all the advocates of Hillary-care.

Yet Canada's doctors send patients to the good ol US of A.

I'm not as out of shape about this website business, but there are far better ways to educate and build awareness.

Kevin,

Maybe you aren't as bent out ot shape about this website business as I am...but nobody is asking YOU to show your breasts after cancer surgery in what I think (this website) is a degrading way.

Talk about boobs....that's whoever came up with the idea.

What's the motivation for the women to do this?

Who's worse?  The website for asking, or the women for showing?

Be clear.......I'm not sure the website fulfills the purpose it claims it intends.

As part of Rethink's "touch, look, check" (TLC) early detection program, women are being asked to do just -- "show their breasts some TLC".

The site teaches women how to check their breasts for abnormalities, DeCouteau said, which is important because most women do find the first lump themselves.

Once women examine their breasts, they are being asked to take photos of their breasts -- whether fully clothed, in a bra or topless -- and upload those pictures to the Booby Wall."

________________

AFTER a self exam the "site" encourages what is stated above...

For what purpose?  What purpose does showing ones breasts after an examination have to do with ANYTHING?

So is it they want to see how many women said the did an exam?  The photo is the badge of honor, like an "I voted" sticker? If that's it...somebody is nuts...you can just sign a list saying - I DID IT!

AS for the women showing... the ones with mastectomies?  They probably believe they are doing something of value.  Who knows?  Some of the other women...It's obvious what they are doing...hoping the publicity from sites like yours will give a cheap thrill to someone.

The title itself...”The booby wall.”  No respect for breast cancer survivors in my opinion, or those who have died.

Who's worse...the website...CLEAR....crystal.

I could care less if that mayor wants to prance around in her underclothes on You Tube...

and I get the intent of your blog.

And I, of course, realize no one is forcing those women to upload their pictures to that website.

"It's ok to show your breasts, even after surgery"

I can't believe you made that statement.... physicians do take photos of all stypes of surgery before and after for records and they are used for educational purposes (on and off the web) - I just don't think this website is the proper venue.

But my problem is with the website itself.  And now that you mention it, that you made the comparison in the first place with something “health” related and with what the mayor did on You Tube.

That aside....I don't know why this bothers me so much...Making light of cancer victims?  Health related?  I can't tell you for sure.  It just hit a nerve.

Truce?

I suspect that if this were a talk show topic, you would not be alone in your sentiments among callers, Janet.

The other part of this blog, the mayor on You Tube: I always laugh when police and firefighters and other public servants get roasted when they pose for fundraising calendars.

Of all the things to get me riled up, that's not one of them.

Dumb website, very dumb.

January 13, 2008 8:46 PM

Kevin Fischer

Then why are so many women getting involved?

Maybe we over-analyze.

Maybe these women are just plain dumb?

I'm just askin'....

January 13, 2008 8:59 PM

Karen123

Who knows.  My impression is that the ones who have had surgery are doing it for educational purposes, the others are doing it because they are exhibitionist or narcissitic  (sp?)  And I bet 95% of the viewers are vouyers.

I just think it's dumb.

Voyeurs?

On the Canadian breast cancer website?

When there are so many other options available, if I may be so bold...if a guy wanted to be lusty?

No way.

People with curious minds, perhaps the 13 year old version.  I can just hear a bunch of kids in a middle school hallway talking about checking out the "Booby Wall" on the web.

I'm not bent out of shape over this, I just think it's dumb.

Mr. Taylor,  don’t even think about it.

Thank God Kate Bloomberg's out of office.

Ouch!

I suppose we could toss John Norquist in there, too.
