This Just In...

Kevin Fischer is an award-winning veteran broadcaster who has been seen and heard on Milwaukee TV and radio stations for nearly three decades.

He lives with his wife, Jennifer, and their baby daughter, Kyla Audrey, in Franklin.

Liberals are embarrassed

By Kevin Fischer

Ever notice how liberals hate being called “liberals?”

Call a liberal a liberal and he reacts as though you just spit in his face.

On the other hand, call Kevin Fischer a conservative.

No reaction.

Yeh, I’m a conservative.

Anything else you have to say?

But for liberals….. the “L” word is akin to profanity.

This past weekend on Channel 10’s InterCHANGE,  I stopped counting at about four the times hyper-liberal Joel McNally used the word, “progressive” instead of………you know………that “L” word.

Who was Joel trying to kid? The word is out. Progressive is code for "liberal."

If you’re a liberal, why are you so ashamed? If you believe in a liberal ideology, why not stand tall and be proud of your “the government and lots and lots of taxes are the solution to everything” philosophy?

Take Barack Obama, for example.

When you’re #1 in your field, isn’t that something to strive for? Shouldn’t you be filled with great pride and accomplishment when you’re #1?

The National Journal just rated all the U.S. Senators and Obama was ranked the most liberal member of the Senate, Numero Uno.

But as far as the Obama camp was concerned…..

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

DON’T TELL ANYBODY!!!!!!!

Columnist Diana West reminds us that the National Journal ratings aren’t exactly front page news:

Just take a look at Obama's endorsements from MoveOn.Org, Ted Kennedy and more than 80 lawyers representing detainees at Guantanamo Bay. Or his positions on illegal aliens, raising taxes on "the wealthy" or talking Muslim world leaders into taking our side in the "war on terror" (despite the fact that some of them are busy abetting or even waging that same war against us).

Such a record sounds downright McGovernesque. But don't mention that out loud. After all, Barack Obama is a presidential candidate who likes to say, "There's not a liberal America and a conservative America -- there is the United States of America." What if it got out that there is also a very liberal Barack Obama?
But notice the difference between Republicans and Democrats when it comes to political labels. Republicans struggle over who will wear the "conservative" mantle, while Democrats strike a "Who, me?" pose when it comes to carrying the "liberal" flag. The National Journal put it this way: both Democratic presidential contenders "have emphasized their liberal policy positions. But neither has embraced the liberal label the way Republican presidential candidates have proudly stamped themselves conservatives."

Then there’s the liberal who claims that he’s not a liberal but a “moderate.”

That’s even worse than being a liberal.

A liberal is consistent.

A moderate is unpredictable, sitting squarely on that fence, who doesn’t know just what he thinks.

He might be opposed to this tax increase…..but supportive of another tax increase.

He might be tough on some criminals but soft on others.

You just never know.

Then there’s the moderate who claims to be a conservative.

He’s dangerous.

He poses in conservative clothes just to get elected, just to get inside the tent.

Once there, he disrupts, causing all sorts of trouble that unravels any unity.

That would be John McCain.

But think about it.

Let’s go the scorecard.

1) Liberals who don’t like being called liberals.

2) Liberals who prefer being called moderates.

3) Moderates (and even some liberals) who claim to be conservative.

Liberals are O for 3……

Nobody wants to be called a liberal.

And can you blame them?

It is pretty embarrassing.

Interesting blog.  I'd like to comment on the group of people that are moderates but call themselves "conservatives."  I have come across so many people like this in the past year or so.  I too have given this some thought and have often wondered if there is a stigma attached to being labeled liberal or even democrat because that is what they are.

One person I know said to me that liberals are thought of as poor, uneducated and looking for hand-outs and that is not how she wants people to see her.  On the flip side, she said that republicans are usually classified as educated, wealthy, and self-sufficient.  But when she votes, she tends to vote Democrat.

So I am curious, is it a stigma thing?  Being stereotyped?  Is it about their image?

I'd also like to comment on the group of people that are moderates but call themselves conservatives on occasion.

It seems that many members of this group believe that cutting government spending is as important of an issue as cutting taxes.  They have no problem speaking out against a "conservative" President who is the worst violator of government spending in modern history.  Many in this group believe that the respect this country has earned over so many years, shouldn't be flushed down the toilet by using the same brutal, torturous tactics that our enemies have stooped to using against our troops in far away lands.  They believe in defending our nation by focusing on defeating our enemies instead of making new ones by the thousands.  They believe that there bigger problems in this country than whether or not the guy, making minimum wage in a farm field in the middle of no where, speaks english or has his green card.  They respect politicans who speak their mind and have the OWN opinion on the issues, even if it means they have to break ranks to do it.  Most of all, they stand for beliefs that they hope will better they're country FIRST, and they're party SECOND and not the other way around.

Yep, It's like I thought.  People accepting the truth about who they really are.

Maybe liberals would prefer to be called Socialists.

Whoooooosh.

I could just hear what you wrote going over their heads, Josh.

"He might be opposed to this tax increase…..but supportive of another tax increase."

Now THAT whooshed over my head. But it does bring to mind this maxim:

"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds."

Karen123

Oops, I meant to say "Yep, It's like I thought.  People NOT accepting the truth about who they really are."

Wrong guy.

I've always thought of the terms 'liberal' and 'progressive' as being interchangeable, and I certainly don't mind being called a liberal, because being a liberal isn't something to be ashamed of, despite what conservatives would have people believe.

Kevin Fischer

This from a guy who won't say who he is or what his affiliation is.

Interesting.

February 16, 2008 4:12 PM

Zach W.

Kevin, if you really need help figuring out my political affiliation, then you're certainly not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree.  In fact, I recall you calling me a "lib" or some variation of that as an attempt to insult me in previous entries, so I'm pretty sure you have a good idea about my affiliation.

February 16, 2008 8:32 PM

Kevin Fischer

I know you're a flaming lefty.

And you're free with the insults, aren't you.

By affiliation, I mean total disclosure.

Name.

Occupation.

Etc.

You won't give it.

Only conclusion I can reach is you're embarrassed.

Otherwise, you wouldn't hide behind the ridiculous moniker of Mr. Zippy.

February 16, 2008 8:42 PM

Zach W.

What does my name and occupation have to do with my political affiliation?  I'm a liberal and I'm not ashamed to admit it; there's not a darn thing to be embarassed about.  If you want to know my name and occupation, you'll have to ask nicely if you really want to know.

As for me being free with the insults, that's an ironic statement coming from you.  At least I can take solace in knowing I can come up with better insults than calling someone "cheesecake breath."

February 16, 2008 8:57 PM

Kevin Fischer

Ok.

Fair enough.

You're not ashamed to admit you're a liberal.

You don't, however, admit who you are or what you do for a living.

I put my name, face, and occupation on my blog and am not ashamed.

That's the difference.

End of discussion.

If you want to pursue, you have your own blog to twist the truth about me as you've done so often.

As I post every Sunday, here are the top five most popular of my blog entries from the previous week

February 17, 2008 8:28 AM

Becky

"I put my name, face, and occupation on my blog and am not ashamed."

Well, you do NOW. You were FORCED to after hiding your job.

Irony much?

February 17, 2008 3:33 PM

Kevin Fischer

Becky, I want to respond to your comment because it has become an issue that quite frankly, I'm tired of because it is just one of the many untruth's circulating.

I told Franklin blogger John Michlig the same information a few weeks ago because he kept writing the same untruth either on his blog or on others.

The fact is, when I first started blogging, I submitted a bio to the managers of this website that included by job as aide to Senator Lazich. Senator Lazich is my boss and my friend. I am proud of that and proud to work for someone who works so hard for her district.

Every week when I appear on TV, it's mentioned that I work for Senator Lazich. Whenever I appear on WISN, I mention that I work for Senator Lazich. And I've always done that since I started working for Senator Lazich. It's not a secret and never has been.

For some reason, the management of this site edited my bio, maybe for the same reason they edit my blogs that end up in the Thursday Journal/Sentinel.

I was never forced to hide my job. I talked about it on the radio and TV constantly.

I am not questioning why my bio was edited. I certainly don't see it as a big deal. I am tired of all the false statements being made about this particular issue and want to set the record straight.

February 17, 2008 3:54 PM

Becky

He said - she said.

I read Michlig's blog, and I can't see any "untruth." What "untruth" do you mean?

February 18, 2008 7:51 AM

Becky

Furthermore, I've never seen you on TV or heard you on the radio. You overestimate your reach, I'm afraid.
