This is a special Cinco de Mayo blog concert featuring wonderful May 5 musical pieces selected just for today. I hope you enjoy as we get you in the Latin mood! (To truly enjoy, don't skip ahead, listen in order, and pretend just a bit that even though you're in the comfort of your own home, you're at a superstar-studded concert. Comprende?)
We open with this 1966 classic TV performace by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass on ABC's Hollywood Palace. See how many of these great instrumentals you remember.
We segue now to Herb Alpert with one of the greatest songwriters of all-time, plus special guests performing Latin tunes mixed in with some gringo affair.
In the 60's, Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 had some big hits, including this one...
Encore!
Sergio Mendes does his popular rendition of a Beatles tune.
We're into that 60's groove now. So, how about a classic instrumental from the 60's still performed today. This one's for my dad. It was one of his favorites. Jeff Stoll at the Packing House always plays it, with no request necessary, for my wife, Jennifer. Here's the originalrecording of Summer Samba from Walter Wanderley...
When I did 58 jobs working my way through college, one of them was as an usher at the Performing Arts Center. I saw West Allis' pride and joy do this medley eight days in a row.
It's time in our concert to slow it down.
Carlos Santana's brother Jorge had his own band and managed a big hit in the early 70's...here's Malo.
Next on our lineup, this isn't just a great Latin number, it's one of the greatest pop songs ever.......Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto.
I know what you're thinking.
Fischer's gone this long without an Elvis song.
In Elvis' "Fun In Acapulco," Elvis sang a very nice ballad poolside.
Frank Sinatra's biggest recording...any idea what it was?
My Way?
Nope.
Strangers in the NIght?
Uh uh.
It was his duet with daughter, Nancy.....Somethin' Stupid.
Raul Malo of the Mavericks sang with Trisha Yearwood and gave this 60's classic a Latin flavor.
60's, 70's...how about something a lot more contemporary?
Dean Martin scored with it.
So did Bobby Rydell.
Michael Buble in this decade does a great job on it, too....
This steamy video showcases a giant recording by Marc Anthony.
