UW Band: Guilty until proven innocent

UW Band Director Michael Leckrone has suspended the entire band as the school investigates serious hazing allegations.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports, “Speaking at a news conference at the UW Welcome Center, Leckrone said he thought only a small percentage of the 300 band members were involved in any hazing, but that the members had a ‘shared responsibility’ to behave appropriately.”

It’s uncertain how long the suspension will last and how many appearances the band will now miss. They will not perform at tonight’s big game at Camp Randall against Ohio State.

One could argue that the suspension is unfair. Leckrone admits a small percentage of the 300- member ensemble is involved. So why punish the entire band? Do your investigation, determine the guilty parties, and then hold them accountable.

Instead, all 300 band members, the vast majority of them innocent, are suspended. Also punished, the tens of thousands of fans who won’t get to enjoy the band at tonight’s football game, and many more who will miss out as long as the investigation takes place.

If I was a band member who did nothing wrong, I’d feel I got a raw deal.

They should have conducted the investigation while letting the band play.  There's always time to punish individuals.  Ultimately, Leckrone and his staff hold the most responsibility.  There were allegations in the past so the leadership should make sure the band is above reproach.  Yet, they suspend everyone.  Is Leckrone still getting paid?  If the band is suspended why not suspend the management?
