Some friend, that Colin Powell

It’s all the buzz in the media today: Colin Powell’s backstabbing of his friend John McCain. The liberal press, anxious to bury the Republican Presidential nominee, can’t hide their contention that Powell’s endorsement of Barack Obama is yet another nail in the GOP coffin. Not surprisingly, print and electronic media pundits seem united in their assessment that the endorsement is the death knell for the McCain campaign in these final two weeks.

Powell denies his choice is based on race. Rush Limbaugh isn’t buying it and took this beauty of a shot in an e-mail to Politico:

"Secretary Powell says his endorsement is not about race. OK, fine. I am now researching his past endorsements to see if I can find all the inexperienced, very liberal, white candidates he has endorsed. I'll let you know what I come up with.

I was also unaware of his dislike for John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Anthony Kennedy and Antonin Scalia. I guess he also regrets Reagan and Bush making him a four-star and secretary of state and appointing his son to head the FCC. Yes, let's hear it for transformational figures."

Powell might also deny that he’s a sellout and deny that he gave the big wet kiss to Obama in hopes of landing a White House position. Yeh, right.

In 2003, the Bush Administration marched Colin Powell in front of the U.N. Security Council, and with a straight face, he knowingly lied to the world about exaggerated and outright fabricated American intelligence that would end up getting this nation into a war that has cost us billions of dollars and thousands of American lives.  It's no secret that Powell disagreed with the direction the Bush Administration was taking this nation.  Yet, in spite of all of this, he kept his mouth shut, did his duty for the Commander in Chief, and bowed out quietly thereafter.  That's called loyalty to your President and your country.  He could have just as easily thrown Bush under the bus like all of the others but he chose not to.

For Bush Republicans to call Colin Powell a sellout is categorically untrue and absolutely outrageous.  They should be damn lucky the guy hasn't been stumping for Obama for the last 6 months considering what he went through during those years.  I sure wouldn't blame him for doing so.  If Obama wins the Presidency, we should be honored to have Colin Powell as Secretary of State once again.

That's Josh Strupp, ladies and gentlemen, the guy who says he's going to vote for McCain.

What a joke!

"We should be honored to have Colon Powell as Secretarty of State again."  Honored  Josh, reallly????

But you said,

"he knowingly lied to the world about exaggerated and outright fabricated American intelligence that would end up getting this nation into a war that has cost us billions of dollars and thousands of American lives.  It's no secret that Powell disagreed with the direction the Bush Administration was taking this nation.  Yet, in spite of all of this, he kept his mouth shut, did his duty for the Commander in Chief."

Honored???

This description sounds like the exact opposite of John McCain, who has no problem standing up to his own President when he thinks he is wrong.

McCain should be proud to NOT have Powell's endorsement according to you.

John McCain is a Senator.  Colin Powell was Sec. of State.  BIG difference Karen.

I was fully aware of my contradiction when I wrote it Karen.  And the question is whether or not (if you agree with my premise that Colin Powell lied to the U.N.) Powell should have resigned prior to giving false testimony to the U.N. Security Council.  After all, he did lie.  I've thought a lot about this dilemma (as I'm sure Powell has done) and believe that Colin Powell's resignation as Secretary of State prior to his testimony would have been the final blow to reason within an administration hell bent on sending this nation into pre-emptive war.  Maybe he felt he could still offer a contradictory opinion within the Bush Administration prior to our invasion, maybe not.  But, ultimately, the decision to go to war was not Powell's decision.  He did Bush's dirty work because it was his duty, as Sec. of State, to do so.  Then he bowed out quietly some time later.  I don't think you can come close to comparing the duties and responsibilities of Sec. of State with those of Senator, especially prior in the run up to the War in Iraq.

For Republicans, who still hold President Bush's foreign policy in such high regard, to now call Colin Powell a sellout is ridiculous.  His words to the U.N. are what gave you your war.  That's the definition of "loyal" in my book.

Kevin, do I get to comment off topic if you do?

Josh (Bush-hater), to answer your question, NO. For that, you've got to have your own blog.

SO you would still feel honored to have Powell, "the liar" (your words), as your Secretary of State?  Interesting.  I guess he will fit right in with an Obama administration.

Yes I would.

Glad to see you are as consistant with your blog rules as you are with some of your political views.

Is "Bush-hater" supposed to be some sort of insult?

October 21, 2008 2:46 PM

Kevin Fischer

Of course not, Josh. My memory's pretty good, and you have left a trail of anti-Bush comments on this and other blogs.

The hypocrisy of the left shows once again. For years, they crucified Powell on the war issue. Now they love the guy. Consistent? Hardly.

October 21, 2008 5:32 PM

J. Strupp

No that doesn't work either.

Colin Powell openly admitted to the mistakes he made during the run up to the War in Iraq.  Opponents of the Iraq War on both sides of the aisle (many who crucified Powell) consider that to be honorable.
